ABOUT THE SITE

SuddenWorld is about giving a voice to cross-cultural issues and events through a minority perspective. My hope is to provide some small remedy against the two opposing forces that tend to dominate the dialogue of our pluralistic society: on the one extreme are mass media’s attempts to transform American culture into a big and bland market-targeted population of complacent consumers; on the opposite end are the forces of factionalism (be they ethnic, economic, religious, or what have you) that threaten to cut themselves off from other perspectives in favor of their own myopic world view.

As individuals so afraid of being left out, we often crave symbols and demagogues, finding comfort in these monolithic rallying points. At other times, we close ourselves off to each other, believing that good fences make good neighbors. However, as the mosaic of our society grows ever more intricate, we should instead endeavor to build bridges into one another’s lives. Therein lie the paths to greater understanding and common decency. There is no greater moral imperative.

It takes a world to make a word, and it takes a word to make a point. Welcome to SuddenWorld.
